Nasa’s crew health and performance exploration analog (chapea) mission 1 crew began their mission june 25 at nasa’s johnson space center in houston, after several weeks of training to acclimate to habitat life and mission operations, as well as safety, communication, and team dynamics. Each mission will consist of four crew members living in the chapea habitat, an isolated 1,700 square foot habitat.
To collect sufficient data, the crew members will live and work in a simulated mars habitat at nasa’s johnson space center in houston, texas, complete with communication delays and environmental stressors. With the first chapea crew more than halfway through their yearlong mission, nasa is using research gained through the simulated missions to help inform crew health and performance support during mars expeditions.
