From 1942 to 1945, she worked with a highly talented group of dancers called the beryl mcburnie dance troupe Mcburnie choreographed a ballet, “jour ouvert”, to music by steelpan leader ellie mannette She continued to work abroad, demonstrating caribbean dance at many colleges in the u.s., and conducted research in south america and trinidad on the origins of caribbean dance.
She is best known for founding the west indian ballet company in 1947 and for her pioneering efforts to promote caribbean dance and culture.
Mcburnie was recognized in november 1978 by the alvin ailey dance group as one of the three black women who had a profound influence on american dance. Through meticulous research, she rescued trinidad and tobago's rich and forgotten heritage, recalling its french, african, and venezuelan roots in both music and dance, yet always portraying that which was common to her country.
